MUSKEGON, Mich. — A community event in Muskegon is hoping to illustrate how West Michiganders protected their home during World War II by taking visitors right into the action.

The “ Air Raid Wardens & Blackout Drills: Civil Defense in WWII ” event will take visitors through an immersive exhibit with photos, hands-on activities and historical storytelling at the Muskegon Heritage Museum of Business & Industry.

As the U.S. got involved in World War II, Civil Defense committees began teaching crucial skills to everyday Americans, like preventing sabotage and responding to air raids, according to the museum.

These committees were active in Muskegon County and would mobilize neighborhoods to teach volunteers and prepare to defend the home front.
