Syracuse, N.Y. — Our hard job at this year’s New York State Fair was to try lots of cocktails. You’re welcome. Someone had to do it.

The options ran the gamut, from sweet and foamy to dry and sophisticated. The word “slushy” figures into many of them. Of course, we were tasting on the coldest day of the summer so far, but we tried to factor in how these sips would go down in the heat.

Like with children, it’s hard to have a favorite, but the Orange Grand Slam is iconic Syracuse and tastes like childhood.
