ARLETA – Los Angeles police Wednesday released the name of an officer who shot and wounded a suspect who allegedly pointed what turned out to be a replica firearm at passing vehicles on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Arleta.

The shooting happened about 5:15 p.m. Thursday near Branford Street and Arleta Avenue after officers responded to reports of an armed man pointing a gun at motorists, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Multiple callers reported that the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Lorenzo Sandoval, was walking along Arleta Avenue, pointing a gun at passing vehicles,” according to an LAPD statement. “Officers located Sandoval walking south on the west sidewalk of Arleta Avenue, armed with a firearm in his right hand.
