JACKSON, MI – The Jackson City Council this week approved small raises for themselves through an unusual voting process.
The City Council voted 5-2 against rejecting a recommended 3% raise from the Local Officers Compensation Commission during a Tuesday, Aug. 19 meeting. This includes a raise for the mayor, City Council members and the vacant treasurer position .
Under Michigan’s Home Rule City Act, the commission meets biannually to recommend the salaries for elected officials. Those recommendations take effect, unless rejected by a two-thirds vote from City Council, meaning at least five of the seven members.
