BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (WBTW) -- Bennettsville police have charged a man with animal abuse in a case involving a puppy that was found near death inside a plastic tote that had been left along the roadside.

Police arrested Bryant Decoy Rogers on Wednesday, and charged him with ill treatment of animals. The puppy, named Journey by shelter workers who cared for her, had to be euthanized several days later because her condition was "too extreme to overcome," the Marlboro County Humane Society said.

Rogers was booked into the Marlboro County Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
