BURLINGTON, N.C. — Firefighters evacuated 20 patients from DaVita Dialysis on Heather Road in Burlington on Wednesday after a natural gas leak forced staff and patients from the building.

The Burlington Fire Department responded to 873 Heather Road around 12:20 p.m. Crews confirmed the smell of natural gas and worked with DaVita staff to evacuate patients who were receiving treatment.

Firefighters set up tents, shade awnings, and electric fans to keep patients comfortable outside. Emergency responders joined dialysis staff to monitor patients’ health and arrange transportation for those needing treatment at other centers. Crews also brought additional medical supplies in case of emergencies.
