NORTON, Ohio — Norton City Schools has canceled its upcoming football game against Northwest High School in Canal Fulton because of "illness affecting student-athletes," the district announced.

The away game was scheduled for Friday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m.

In a statement posted to Facebook , Norton City Schools said the decision was made in consultation with the district’s nursing staff, citing the health and safety of students as the top priority.

"We know how much our community looks forward to supporting our student-athletes each week. However, the well-being of our students must always come first. We appreciate the understanding of our families, fans, and Northwest Local Schools as we make this difficult but necessary decision," said Norton City Schools in a statement.
