ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Opening statements began Wednesday in the retrial of a former state trooper, since elected mayor of a small west Georgia city, on charges of vehicular homicide.
A.J. Scott, the mayor of Buchanan, Georgia , is facing two counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree and reckless driving. Those charges and others stem from a September 2015 crash from his time as a trooper that claimed the lives of two teenagers and injured two others.
“In the defendant’s own words he tells Cpl. Alexander, ‘I went right when I should have gone left.’ And Cpl. Alexander asks him, ‘Were you running lights and sirens and were you going to a call?’ And he says, ‘No,’” prosecutor Heather Waters said.
