LANDRUM, S.C. —

The Landrum Cardinals started red hot a year ago, going 5-1 over the season's first six weeks before losing their final four games.

"We just gotta finish," said head coach Mike Reid. "We start out the season pretty well. We've got a very good region, you've gotta come ready to play. We've got to finish games, we get up a good bit early and then fall off late."

Reid steps into a new role, leading the Cardinals after the past two seasons spent as the team's defensive coordinator. He'll lean on an experienced roster that returns more than half its starters from a year ago, and cites their work ethic as a key factor for his first team.

"Our kids come to work every day and they're excited to play football," said Reid. "I think they're ready to go."
