YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — The U.S.-Mexico border wall may soon get a new look. Homeland Security officials say they are moving forward with a plan to paint the massive steel barrier black, arguing the change could make it harder to climb in the desert heat.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem joined workers on Tuesday in New Mexico. She grabbed a paint roller and helped coat the first stretch of fencing. She said President Donald Trump wanted it this way.
“Today we are also going to be painting it black, that is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in hot temperatures down here, when something is painted black, it gets even warmer and it will make it even harder for people to climb,” Noem said.
