LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- The Michigan House of Representatives has passed a plan to dedicate a portion of M-34 in Hillsdale County to Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr., who was shot and killed during a traffic stop last year.

The bill was first introduced in the Senate, and would dedicate the portion of highway M-34 in Hillsdale County between Pioneer Rd and S Pittsford Rd as the "Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr. Memorial Highway."

Butler, a Hillsdale County sheriff's deputy and Michigan Army National Guard veteran, was shot and killed in June 2024 while assisting with a traffic stop. Police say when Butler attempted to arrest the man he pulled over, the man pulled out a gun and shot him. Butler was taken to the hospital by another deputy, where he died of his injuries.
