HATTERAS, N.C. — Residents who live on Hatteras Island are now sheltering in place after portions of NC 12 were shut down now that extreme ocean overwash from coastal flooding threatens driving conditions.
In Buxton, 13News Now observed property damage and massive overwash. And in Rodanthe, concern loomed among residents, including Ryan Jones.
“It’s rough to see these houses that have been standing for so long, and they might not make it through the night," said Jones.
Jones and others said they believe all they can do is watch and pray that the damage caused is not devastating.
“There’s nothing left here to protect this, it’s a dying breed of houses," said Jones, who has rental properties in Salvo, near Rodanthe.
