The 2025 Presidential Debates Task Force has confirmed that the scheduled debates will go ahead despite the withdrawal of two major political parties, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Task Force Chairperson Golden Matonga said the debates, set to run from August 21 to September 4, 2025, remain a crucial platform for presidential candidates to present their visions and policies to the public.

Matonga emphasized that while participation is voluntary, the debates serve as a vital democratic duty, offering citizens an opportunity to make informed choices. He warned that non-participation may be viewed as denying voters the chance to hold leaders accountable.
