Police in Zambia’s Eastern Province have confirmed the death of a man in Sinda District who allegedly took his own life after being accused of defiling a minor.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, identified the deceased as Mabvuto Phiri, who had been reported missing since August 15, 2025, following allegations that he defiled a girl under the age of 16.

According to Mweemba, Phiri was discovered hanging from a tree earlier today. Police officers who visited the scene found the body still suspended. Upon inspection, officers observed that the body had swollen legs from the knees, fresh bruises on both legs, and another bruise on the right side of the forehead.

The remains have been taken to Kalindawalo Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem to determine the exact caus
