CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — Defense attorneys for a former Georgia State Patrol trooper and the current Buchanan mayor argued on Wednesday that the crash that killed two teens in 2015 was a tragic accident and not a crime.

A Carroll County jury heard opening statements from Mayor Anthony Scott's lawyers and prosecutors and testimony from the first witnesses in the case.

The Sept. 26, 2015, crash happened on Highway 27 near Holly Springs Road outside Bremen. Troopers said Scott was driving 90 mph in a 55-mph zone before slowing to 65 mph at the time of impact.

He collided with a car turning left, carrying four teenagers. 17-year-old Kylie Lindsey and 16-year-old Isabella Chinchilla were killed. The driver, Dillon Wall, and passenger Ben Finken were seriously injured.
