MORRISTOWN, Vt. (WCAX) - Report cards will look different this year as Lamoille South Supervisory Union students return to class.
The school has used proficiency-based grading for just under a decade, but the superintendent says, after much community feedback, it’s time to turn the page.
Vermont started using proficiency-based learning in 2014, following the Act 77 Flexible Pathways legislation. In the following years, each school decided how they wanted to implement the method, creating frustration and confusion. Lamoille South says they’re keeping the good and ditching the bad parts in hopes of clearing up confusion.
In proficiency-based learning, students master a skill before progressing to the next level, which means extra time is given to the student to understand a topic before m
