Help Alberta Wildies Society will be petitioning the province to protect Alberta's wild horse population from further decline.

Darrell Glover, founder and president of Help Alberta Wildies Society (HAWS), expects well over 10,000 signatures from Albertans will be collected by the end of the month on the petition that will be heading to the legislature.

"These are real people that want action. They want these horses recognized as a naturalized species in Alberta and they want that word feral removed. They want the contraception to stop because we really believe that that will lead to an equine genocide," Glover said.

The petition is a first for HAWS to continue to raise awareness and stop "the slow burn to extinction," he said.
