Local history won’t be repeating itself when the 2025 Minto Cup wraps up in St. Catharines.

Unlike in 1947, 1991, and 2001, when St. Catharines captured the Canadian junior-A lacrosse championship as the host team, the Athletics won’t be the last team this year.

That will either be the Orangeville Northmen, the two-time defending Ontario champion and first-place finisher in Minto Cup qualifying this week at Meridian Centre, or the Coquitlam Adanacs from British Columbia, who took the national title as the home team last year.

Coquitlam, Orangeville, and the A’s all went 2-1 in the round robin, but the Northmen won the tiebreaker based on goal differential, earning a bye into a best-of-three final that got underway on Thursday night. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday, with a third game, if
