KEARNEYSVILLE -- Washington High School sophomore Tristan Boggs and his mom, Nicole Vergason, cheered as a vehicle painted in black, grey, white and purple flew across the Jefferson County Fair Arena, during the Tuff Truck & Car Contest on Wednesday night.

The colors, they pointed out, were the same as those in the asexual pride flag -- a clear nod to the driver's sexual orientation. They, themselves, are both queer -- Boggs is bisexual and Vergason is lesbian. While they have long enjoyed attending automobile sporting events like this one together, and make it to every one at the fair, as well as to many held throughout the region, they often feel like the minority at these events, due to their position as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
