A 16-year-old boy was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly driving under the influence in a predawn crash in Marblehead that killed a 13-year-old girl, officials said.

The crash occurred just after 2:50 a.m. in the area of 352 Atlantic Ave., the Essex district attorney’s office said in a statement.

Emergency responders arrived to find a car “with extensive damage and a 13-year-old female who had suffered life-threatening injuries,” officials said.

The girl, whose name was withheld, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The superintendent of the town’s public schools, John Robidoux, said the girl was an eighth-grade student, according to media reports.

“Her death is a devastating loss to our community,” Robidoux said.
