TYLER, Texas — CHRISTUS Health is reminding the East Texas community of the benefits of breastfeeding during August, which happens to be Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
Breast milk is vital to a baby's well-being because it contains antibodies that fight off viruses and bacteria. This lowers the risk of infection or other health complications like diarrhea or respiratory illness.
"Infants who breastfeed are drastically impacted positively in building their immune system," Caroline Pillsbury, nurse and lactation consultant at CHRISTUS, said. "It starts the child off with a good foundation and promotes their ability to fight off any potential illnesses as they grow."
