A man was shot and killed at Scarborough Town Centre on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. at the mall located at 300 Borough Drive, according to Toronto police.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting and found an adult male in his 20s unconscious in a family washroom near the lower-level food court. A firearm was also discovered at the scene. Paramedics pronounced the man dead shortly after their arrival.
Acting Inspector Baheer Sarvanandan stated that the police are treating the death as suspicious. No information about the shooter or shooters has been released.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the lower-level food court and nearby washrooms were closed, but the rest of the mall remained open for business. A spokesperson for Scarborough Town Centre confirmed that mall employees initially responded to the situation and are now providing support to their colleagues.
Witnesses described a calm atmosphere inside the mall following the incident. Some shoppers continued to eat and order food at nearby restaurants, while police cordoned off a large section of the food court.
Steven Gabrill, a regular visitor to the mall, recounted his experience. He was exiting the washroom when he saw police rushing toward the family washroom. "I saw them all coming up here, and they said, ‘Nothing to look at — just keep on going,’" he said.
As the investigation continued, police asked customers to clear the area around the washroom. By around 4 p.m., mall management began closing restaurants in the lower-level food court, prompting many patrons to leave.
This incident marks the 27th homicide in Toronto this year, with 15 of those victims having died from gun violence. Police have indicated that a significant presence will remain in the area as they continue their investigation.
