The Crown will not be appealing last month’s sexual assault acquittals in the high-profile Hockey Canada trial .

The defence was informed of the Crown’s decision Thursday afternoon, just days away from the deadline to file an appeal with the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia acquitted Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, Dillon Dubé, and Cal Foote on July 24 of sexually assaulting a then-20-year-old woman known as E.M. in a room at the Delta Armouries hotel in London, Ont. in June 2018. McLeod was also acquitted of being a party to a sexual assault, for allegedly encouraging his teammates to have sex with E.M. when he ought to have known she wasn’t consenting.

The Crown had 30 days from July 24 to file an appeal. Canada
