ATLANTA — As if the Southeastern Conference football schedule already wasn't daunting enough, conference officials announced Thursday they would be transitioning to a nine-game conference in 2026.

The SEC currently operates on an eight-game conference schedule and has announced several other changes to make each SEC team see its respective opponents more often, but while still keeping traditional rivalry games in tact.

Here's what is new about SEC play beginning next season:

Each school will play three annual opponents in an effort to maintain traditional rivalries in the SEC

Each team's remaining six games will rotate among the remaining conference schools

Each team will face every other SEC program at least once every two years and every opponent home and away in four years
