Harvard faculty members were told this week that ‘Black Lives Matter’ signs in their office windows violated campus policies and must be taken down.

The “Black Lives Matter” lettering spread across the Northwest Science Building has been there since the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder by a former Minneapolis Police officer in 2020. Harvard said the sign violates university campus use rules, which were instituted in August 2024.

The rules “prohibit self-mounted displays except in designated areas and with the advance approval of the relevant local school contact,” James Chisholm, a Harvard University spokesperson, said.
