Gary Health Department shuts down grocery store

An abrupt closing of a local grocery store near downtown Gary highlighted the ongoing struggles residents have in finding quality food and produce in the city.

The store formerly known as Sam's Market, now called Super Save, was shut down indefinitely by the Gary Health Department Wednesday. The department cited multiple health code violations that were not addressed.

"We remain committed to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of our community," city officials said in a statement posted online. "Thank you to the residents who continue to look out for one another."

When contacted, the Health Department declined to comment beyond the social media post.
