Two months after a deadly police shootout in Chesterton ignited a row between town leadership and the director of Porter County's 911 dispatch center, the Chesterton and Porter police departments are considering a small policy change that could help the two agencies work more effectively with the county.
Porter County Central Communications Executive Director Debby Gunn has asked that the two towns' police chiefs direct their departments' dispatchers to reach her staff during emergencies by calling 911, rather than through a separate administrative line. This minor procedural change, Gunn said, could reduce the likelihood that communications between town and county dispatchers break down during a crisis.
Both chiefs told The Times that they are open to the idea.
