BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has announced that they will be moving to a 9-game football conference schedule beginning in 2026.

The SEC played the 2024 season under an 8-game model and will use that model again in 2025 before switching to the new model in 2026.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says the new format will deliver competitive games and protect rivalries.

“Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities’ commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation. This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.”
