TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Tucson celebrated its 250th birthday on Aug. 20.

The celebrations included a plaque unveiling, the reveal of a time capsule buried in 1976, an interfaith prayer service, and more.

The city was established in 1775 as a Spanish presidio, but the land was occupied by the Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui peoples for thousands of years before that.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero honored that long history during Wednesday’s event at City Hall, emphasizing a plus sign next to the number “250″ on the commemorative plaque.

It read, " In honor of Tucson’s 250+ years, this plaque commemorates a shared legacy rooted in history and shaped by people who call this desert home."
