WAVERLY, Iowa (KCRG) - An Eastern Iowa domestic violence shelter is asking for help after its building was destroyed in a fire.

That fire happened at the Friends of the Family shelter over the weekend in Waverly.

Emergency crews believe it was likely an electrical issue that caused it.

Twenty-one people were staying at the shelter when the fire started around midnight.

“Our team was awesome. We worked to get them into hotels, that was the next step,” Friends of the Family Executive Director Ben Brustkern said.

No one was hurt in the fire.

But now, the nonprofit is asking the community for help to continue to pay for those hotel rooms because its building is a complete loss.
