BEAUMONT, Texas — More than 7 million free meals were served to Texas students during the 2023–2024 school year, thanks in part to advocacy by No Kid Hungry Texas.
In Beaumont ISD, the need is especially great. Child Nutrition Director Mary Vivrett said 71% of the district's students are considered to have a severe need, qualifying for free meals through the state’s Community Eligibility Provision program. That number is up 9% compared to last year.
“If students are not adequately nourished, they can’t learn, they can’t think,” Vivrett said.
The program allows high-poverty schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
Families do not need to apply.
“They do not need to enroll in it. The fact that they’re enrolled at the school district is all that matters,” Vivrett expl
