KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hours after Missouri's auditor announced a full audit of the Hickman Mills School District, the school board met Thursday to revise its budget projecting serious new financial woes.

Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick referenced several cases of questionable spending including overseas student field trips to the previous superintendent's birth country paid for with a school credit card.

The auditor isn't the only one calling out possible reckless spending in the district.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Dennis Carpenter said the district began the fiscal year in July with $3.5 million less than it projected in May, and he projects they'll spend about $12 million more than they bring in this year.
