Whatever happened to “picking winners and losers”?

President Trump’s plan to bail out the flagging Intel Corp. is a straight-up intervention by the federal taxpayer to correct the flawed management of a private company that is otherwise headed for sale, or worse.

Republicans used to call that “picking winners and losers” and were opposed to it when Democratic President Barack Obama advocated for it. Now, Republicans can’t wait to get into the state capitalism business.

The proposal for Trump’s administration to take a 10 percent stake in Intel is no different in any way from the 2008-2009 Troubled Asset Relief Program that saved General Motors and Chrysler Corp. from a disastrous liquidating bankruptcy.
