A plan to vent containers of tritium waste at Los Alamos National Laboratory is a few steps closer to fruition.

The National Nuclear Security Administration has completed an independent technical review of its plan to vent four flanged tritium waste containers, which it said is needed to safely dispose of the waste and prevent an unplanned release.

The technical review concluded the plan was "technically sound, well-understood, and poses no undue risk to the public, worker, or the environment."

The plan has been beset with delays. Although officials intended to vent the containers in 2020, a shortage of on-site staff during the COVID-19 pandemic kept the process from going forward.
