If you’re a food-and-drink TikTok consumer, a regular viewer of Hulu’s “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” or a Mormon yourself, you certainly know all about dirty sodas.

Contrary to what the name might imply, the drink has no alcohol in it, which is one reason they are popular among Mormons — and Mormon wives. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints generally do not consume alcohol, hot coffee or tea. In fact, the trend first took root in Utah, the Mormon stronghold.

In 2010 — in Utah — the drive-through chain Swig began hawking its sodas customized with syrups, fruit purees and creams. Today, it has dozens of locations across the U.S. Other chains like Sodalicious and Fiiz followed, gathering adherents in western states first before spreading around the country.
