A BASEBALL player who just signed his first professional contract died in a car crash aged just 22.

Nick Danbrowney from New Jersey was involved in the horror smash in North Carolina on August 18.

He was the passenger in a vehicle being driven by 65-year-old Rosario Edgar, ABC News 13 reported.

The car was reportedly traveling at speed and left the road before overturning.

Danbrowney was thrown out of the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Edgar, meanwhile, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

The baseball player just signed a deal with Bakersfield Train Robbers in California.

He was a star in both high school at Barnegat and Ramapo College.

Train Robbers manager Bill Rogan said he was "numb" in a statement.

It read, "Our entire team is devastated.
