FAIRFAX, Va. — The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced Friday that George Mason University violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by unlawfully using race and other immutable characteristics in its hiring and promotion procedures.

In the announcement , the Education Department said it delivered a proposed Resolution Agreement to the university, giving GMU 10 days to voluntarily remedy the violations or face potential enforcement actions.

This federal finding has been part of a broader push by the Trump administration and allies to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts nationwide, and is one of multiple investigations opened by the Education Department as well as the Department of Justice.
