A Parliamentary Committee in India has drawn attention to what has been described as an "existential threat" to flight safety systems in India. According to the BBC, the cause is a "profound and persistent shortage of technical and regulatory personnel" , with almost half of the current available posts at the aviation safety regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), remaining unfilled.

The Parliamentary Committee was tasked with investigating and reporting to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) following the accident involving Air India 171, a Boeing 787 en-route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, which crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12.
