AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) -Governor Mills signed a proclamation at the State House commemorating the 90th anniversary of Social Security.

In the midst of uncertainty about the future of the program, Gov. Mills, along with Senator Angus King and representatives of AARP, cited the importance of Social Security and how it impacts Maine.

According to AARP, $7.2 billion in annual payments contributes to the state’s economy.

370,000 Mainers, including 20,000 children, rely on social security.

Mills discussed the history of Social Security while calling on the Trump Administration to think twice when it comes to cuts made to the administration stressing that right now is not the time to go backwards.
