Cameron County’s plan to build a new pedestrian walkway at Gateway International Bridge in downtown Brownsville has cleared a major hurdle now that a Presidential Permit has been issued for the project.
Separate from a $133 million federal modernization project for Gateway bridge soon to begin phase one, the $10 million county project involves construction of a separate, two-lane pedestrian walkway to be located just west of the existing bridge.
Presidential Permits are required for all new border crossings, international bridges and “certain other transboundary facilities” at the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico, according to the State Department.
