An $80 million plan to redevelop the historic Palace Theatre has faced lengthy delays.

Last year, the Gary Redevelopment Commission sold the movie place at E. 8th Avenue and Broadway to BWI Construction for $2,500.

More than a year has passed, and construction has not started at the Palace Theatre at 791 Broadway.

Gary Redevelopment Commission board member George Rogge said the project has been delayed because the developer has not yet been able to obtain tax credits while seeking to finance the project.

"I do ask at almost every meeting what's happening with the Palace Theatre," Rogge said. "There's been a glitch in getting these tax credits. The project hasn't been going anywhere. It's been really slow."
