SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The Black Moon - you might be wondering what that is If you go looking for it, you won’t see it.

That’s because astronomy experts say you’re basically looking at the side of the moon not being illuminated by the sun.

“The black moon is basically just a new moon and it occurs when the moon is in between the earth and the sun,” Hannah Sparkes, the planetarium supervisor for Bishop Museum of Science and Nature told ABC7.

“The illuminated side of the moon is actually not visible to us. The other side is dark, so we’re kind of seeing the dark side of the moon in a way. It also rises when the sun rises and sets when the sun sets so not visible to us at all but we call it a Black Moon nonetheless.“
