The Boston Police Department celebrated 97 new officers joining its ranks with a swearing-in ceremony Friday.

Families were by the recruits' sides at Boston University's Agganis Arena, where Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox spoke, along with the class president, Officer Crystal Ortiz.

Finding new officers has been a challenge for police departments across the country, including in Boston .

Officer Austin Marini told NBC10 Boston that his motivation comes from being able to serve the community where he grew up.

"Helping the community. I've always wanted to be a cop for my whole life, so it's a dream come true," he said.
