MADISON (WKOW) -- Part of the Capital Springs State Trail was closed on Friday due to a sanitary sewer overflow at the nearby Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant.

MMSD needs to use "heavy, earth-moving equipment" to repair the plant property that is adjacent to the trail.

"At this time, it is not known when the overflow began or how many gallons of wastewater have been released," a news release stated.

MMSD did not have a timeline for when the trail would reopen.
