Portland surpassed 100 degrees Friday afternoon, a relatively rare triple-digit high for the metro area.
Lee Picard, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Portland office, said a preliminary high of 101 degrees was recorded at Portland International Airport. The previous record high temperature for August 22 was 98 degrees in 1942.
It’s the first time this summer Portland has seen a triple-digit high. The last 100-degree temperature recorded at the airport was on Sept. 5, 2024, per weather service records.
The daily record comes as a heat wave moves through much of the Willamette Valley. Saturday is expected to have similar conditions.
“Tomorrow’s going to be a lot like today,” Picard said. “It could be a degree warmer, it wouldn’t shock me.”
A slow cooling will begin
