Detroit – The Tigers will select the contract of left-handed reliever Drew Sommers from Triple-A Toledo before the game Friday night, The Detroit News confirmed.
But that’s not the intriguing part of the story.
The Tigers weren’t going to enter these next few series, two with left-handed heavy Kansas City and one with the Athletics, with only one left-handed reliever.
And with lefties Bailey Horn and Brant Hurter not eligible to return from Toledo until the first week of September, Sommers was next up.
And he’s earned the chance to make his big-league debut. The 25-year-old, acquired from the Rays for Mason Englert, has posted a 3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings with the Mud Hens, striking out 41 with 14 walks.
