NEW YORK -- No American man has won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.
That’s 22 years and counting.
But American tennis star Ben Shelton, the world No. 6, believes it’s only “a matter of time” before an American man breaks through and wins a major.
“This is my favorite tournament,” Shelton, the 22-year-old left-hander from Atlanta and 2023 U.S. Open semifinalist, said ahead of his first match on Sunday. “I think that we’ve got a lot of guys....who can make deep runs here and play against the best players in the world. I think that it’s a matter of time for us.
“You know, I think that the media will keep probably asking questions and debating until that happens. I can’t wait for that to happen, then we can kind of move on to a different question.”
