Elderly drivers could be required to undergo mandatory eye tests, and the drink-drive limit may be lowered as part of a comprehensive overhaul of driving laws. This comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of deaths and serious injuries on UK roads.

In April, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed her openness to the idea of compulsory eye examinations for older drivers to keep their licences. The suggestion came from a Prevention of Future Deaths report submitted to the Transport Secretary by Lancashire's senior coroner, Dr James Adeley, following four fatalities involving drivers with poor vision.
