TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The U.S. is halting the issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers.

“Was this pause necessary? Yes,” said President and CEO of Idaho Trucking Association Allen Hodges.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the news on Thursday, effective immediately. This comes after the Department of Transportation said it was investigating a truck driver accused of making an illegal U-turn that caused a deadly crash in Florida.

Federal authorities have said the truck driver entered the U.S. illegally.

“The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” Rubio said on a post on X.
