Builders working on a luxury home extension in Lytham, Lancashire, have made a tragic discovery. Human remains, believed to belong to children, were found buried in the cellar of the property. The unsettling find occurred on 15 August, prompting a swift response from Crime Scene Investigators who arrived at Cleveland Road to examine the site.
Lancashire Police have confirmed that the remains are human and are likely from a historic burial ground that existed in the area long before the current residential developments were established. Detective Inspector Andrew Crook described the situation as "incredibly sad" and stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine the identity and age of the remains, as well as the circumstances surrounding their burial.
"We are keeping an open mind, but I want to make it clear that we are not treating this as suspicious," Crook said. He emphasised that the burial appears to be isolated and historical in nature. The police have thanked the homeowners and contractors for their cooperation during the investigation.
The builders were in the process of transforming the modest terraced house into a modern property, which included plans for a cinema room and games lounge. Following the discovery, all construction work was halted as police conducted their inquiries.
The remains have since been removed from the site, and police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying the individuals. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the police on 101, quoting log 0616 of 15 August.
